Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a nation on the Island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. The Western third of the Island is occupied by Haiti. The native language in the Dominican Republic is Spanish. Their capitol is Santo Domingo. Their cuisine is a combination of Spanish and African influence. Foods such as eggs and mashed,or boiled plantain which is called Mangu', for breakfast. A basic lunch is fish or chicken with beans and rice. The native people favor starches and meats over dairy and vegetable products. The children often chew on the canes from the sugar cane fields. The beverages they drink are beer, rum and freshly squeezed juices. The Ethnic Groups are 73%-multiracial, 16% white and 11% black. Most of the workers in the sugar cane fields make less then $15.00 US per week. 100 of their peso's =$2.75 US. The biggest crime in the Caribbean is drugs being smuggled out of the area.
